The Portland Mural ProjectA 40-foot canvas in the heart of Portland.
In November 2018, I was honored to recieve a $40,000 grant from Coca-Cola through their Dear Future Community initiative. The objective of the grant was to launch a project that would increase volunteerism among young adults in Portland. The project proposal I developed was the Portland Mural Project, of which the goal was to create a mural that would unite the city of Portland and inspire Portlanders to give back to the community. After two years of work creating a vision to paint a community & service-themed mural, running a state-wide art competition, developing mural designs with local artists, and collaborating with the Portland arts community, the Portland Mural Project's Lift You Up mural was completed in May 2021. Located at the corner of 9th & SW Harvey Milk Street in downtown Portland, the two-story, 40-foot mural is timelessly displayed in the heart of downtown Portland. The mural includes an outline where passerby can stand and become part of the mural design to take a photo. The mural also includes a QR code that, when scanned, connects passerby to a database of volunteer opportunities located all across Oregon. This project was only made possible through the support of The Coca-Cola Company, Swire Coca-Cola, The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, and New Avenues for Youth. Hope in MotionYouth taking action.
Hope in Motion is our youth-led service initiative promoting youth volunteerism and leadership locally and globally. Our projects first open the eyes of youth to the issues that their communities face. We then equip them with the tools to take action on the issues that they are most passionate about. Through our collaborative effort, stigmas and stereotypes begin to break down and youth see firsthand the difference they can make—no matter their age. |
